Strengthening linkages for gender aware and inclusive policy making processes

Project Manager: Vladimír Bartovic

Timeframe: completed (Decemebr 2011)

Executive Summary:

Women in Macedonia (especially those from socially excluded groups) are affected by unequal treatment and therfore low participation in economic and political decision making processes. Although the legislation in place has already set the basis for equal treatment of women and men, in practice the mechanisms lack the capacity to implement, monitor and evaluate specific measures and actions.

The project wanted to change this situation by strengthening the participation of civil society organisations in drafting gender aware legislation and in monitoring the implementation of the legislation by organizing seminars and trainings aimed at increased participation of relevant NGOs in the policy-making process.

Outputs:

  • Four-day study trip to the Czech Republic. The trip aimed to familiarize its participants with advocacy and lobbying initiatives for gender equality and participation in policy making in the Czech Republic. Organized by EUROPEUM for local CSOs EOCs and municipal representatives from Macedonia.

Enhancing the Influence and Cross-Border Co-operation between CSO in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia regarding European Integration

Project Manager: David Král

Timeframe: ongoing (October 2010)

Executive summary:

The idea of project is to enable the creation of NGO and expert coalitions focused on the process of European integration in Bosnia and Serbia. This will open a public debate and raise the awareness among citizens of both countries about the integration process, and support the development of public and expert pressure on the government institutions. It will also strengthen the regional cooperation and help to identify common interests and obstacles in the process of European integration. This will be supplemented by looking at the Czech example and the experience generated during the pre-accession period.

The first part of the project will take place in Bosnia and in Serbia in the form of brain-storming workshop for representatives of NGOs, experts and journalists, aiming at creation of coalitions which will exercise pressure on political representatives and institutions regarding the European integration issues. The last stage will take place in Bosnia or Serbia. It will be a conference of the representatives of coalitions from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia, as well as Czech experts, focusing on the issues selected and discussed within each workshop, and on identifying the common interests for two countries in the context of European integration, creating the space for establishment of cross-border interest coalitions.

Publications

  • Democracy Delayed: Obstacles in Political Transition

This collection of articles, compiled by Democracy Reporting International (DRI) and Institute for European Policy EUROPEUM, responds to requests made by some Arab reformers to deepen their knowledge of how political change in Eastern Europe unfolded. Rather than focussing on the successful transitions, it presents case studies which recall the difficulties, pitfalls and political missteps which jeopardised these countries’ transitions and even caused some of them to fail.
