European Summer School History

The idea to organise the European Summer School in Prague was born in 2002 and the first year of this event took place in the summer of 2003. Based on personal experience of team members who were involved in many educational projects, ESS 2003 was evaluated in a positive way and the decision was made that 'the show must go on'. EUROPEUM Institute for European Policy is proud to announce the tenth anniversary of this project and is looking forward to its continuation and further development.

It is obvious that the whole project had to be regularly assessed, updated and modified. Thanks to sincere feedback of our participants we were able to build up the milestones and tailored the topics according to both the needs of participants and topical issues in the European Union. Since 2003, the European Summer School has been walking a long way. In the first year, the Czech Republic was not an EU member. In 2007, we reflected the birth of the Lisbon Treaty and, in 2009, we commented the presidency of the Czech Republic in the European Union.

Despite the naturally gradual development, there were some constant features of this event. First of all, it was the European Union that we were examining from different points of view and, secondly, the perspective of Central Europe, which is quite specific thanks to the joint political and cultural heritage of countries like Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. This particular approach and the focus on Central Europe in the EU has significantly added to a general success of this project and its very good reputation in the university community.
