The United States has launched new import tariffs – customs duties of at least 10% now affect dozens of countries, including the EU, Japan, and South Korea, with some sectors potentially being hit even harder. European institutions are already talking about the risks to global supply chains and rising consumer prices. Martin Vokálek, Executive Director of the EUROPEUM Institute, commented on ČT24.

Fifteen percent is the basic tariff for most products, but it is expected that the rate will be higher for some commodities, such as steel and aluminum. For these products, exporting to the US may not be economically viable, and the EU will have to focus on selling them to other countries. Conversely, some products, such as those in the aviation and pharmaceutical sectors, may not be subject to tariffs at all. The positive aspect is that these tariffs are finally predictable, allowing European exporters to plan and decide what to export to the US and what to direct to other markets.
