Our researcher Kateřina Davidová commented on the ongoing Climate Conference in Glasgow for CNN Prima News 360°.

In recent months, the European Union has made several changes in the field of space research that will give the Czech Republic more opportunities to get involved in this area. How space projects are progressing in the EU and what opportunities it brings to the Czech Republic will be the subject of another Café Evropa debate.

EUROPEUM Institute for European Policy researcher Kateřina Davidová commented on the COP26 summit in Glasgow in the morning broadcast of the Czech Radio. On what approach is likely to be taken by the major players such as the US, China, Saudi Arabia or Russia and whether there is still hope of meeting the main goals of the Paris Agreement.

Our research fellow Vít Havelka together with Torval Tangeland, Petr Soukup, Nikola Hořejš, and Pål Strandbakken wrote a Policy Paper as a part of the project Green Transformation: Sustainable Consumption and European Single Market policies supported by the Norway Grants in the Czech Republic. In this paper, he compares and identifies knowledge gaps between Czech and Norwegian consumers. He gives an overview of the present situation in both countries, including possible research gaps and describes the unique national contexts and experiences.

Zdeněk Beránek, director of the EUROPEUM Institute for European Policy, spoke to Czech Radio about Joe Biden's European tour and his meeting with Emmanuel Macron for the first time since the diplomatic row over the cancelled delivery of French submarines to Australia. He explained what the agenda of their meeting was, i.e. how this row has affected French-American relations, but also how cooperation is taking place in the light of the rise of China, or on the topics of economic recovery and climate change.

The latest National Convention on the EU took place on the 15th of October 2021. Here is a summary of the basic points discussed at the Convention. The recommendation was prepared by Michal Hrubý.

In his policy paper "New START Treaty – State, future and implications for the EU and V4", written in cooperation with the Think Visegrad think tank, Juraj Sýkora, a Junior Researcher at SFPA, analyses the current state of nuclear arms control, the New START Treaty, what it contains and who it concerns. The policy paper also analyses the prospects until 2026, when the extension of the Treaty expires.

In her policy paper "Terrorism, Cryptocurrencies and the EU Response", written under the project Think Visegrad in Brussels, Asya Metodieva, a research fellow at the Institute of International Relations Prague, writes about what terrorists use cryptocurrencies for, assesses ongoing regulatory initiatives at the EU level, and last but not least, examines how the Visegrad Four (V4) countries view cryptocurrencies in relation to terrorism-related threats at the level of national level.

Zdeněk Beranek, Director of the EUROPEUM Institute for European Policy, commented for the news portal E15 on the future direction of Czech foreign policy towards the European Union. Beránek does not expect a significant change in attitude towards the EU and expects the anti-Brussels rhetoric to cease with the new government. On the other hand, relations with problematic EU members such as Poland and Hungary will weaken.

A new government will lead the Czech Republic after the recent elections. It will have to face domestic challenges such as high inflation and rapidly growing national debt, the transition to a low-carbon economy and the issue of affordable housing. At the same time, however, the Czech government will also face many important issues with European implications. The future direction of the Czech Republic within the EU will be another topic of Café Evropa debates.
