By declaring a trade war on the world, the United States has inflicted the greatest damage on itself. It will be the American economy that feels the consequences most painfully.

Absurd calculations and the imposition of "retaliatory" tariffs on islands inhabited only by penguins serve as yet another reminder that Donald Trump is not secretly playing a sophisticated, multi-move game—as some had hoped—but is simply revealing his own incompetence.

The greatest harm Donald Trump is causing is the deep erosion of trust. This damage will burden us for many years after he leaves office. Perhaps we are not merely witnessing a temporary swing of the pendulum, but a lasting shift into the post-transatlantic era.
