ČRo Plus | The victory of Nicușor Dan in Romanian presidential elections

Nicușor Dan's victory was in a way a surprise, because it seemed from the lead in the first round that mobilisation for him would be difficult, but in the end he mobilised an incredible number of people, even those who hold completely different political views. The key factor was that voters voted against Simioni rather than because Dan appealed to them so much. Viktor Daněk, deputy director of the EUROPEUM Institute, commented for ČRo Plus.
22. May 2025

In Europe, many were relieved, the idea of George Simion becoming president was at least a complication for European politicians, perhaps even frightening. Another Orbán-style politician would be at the table in the European Council, and although Simion has rather anti-Hungarian views in many respects, he is quite similar to Viktor Orbán in his views on Ukraine, Russia and geopolitical challenges in the world.

I hope the outcome is accurate enough to soothe the wounds. This is far from the first case in Europe where the Constitutional Courts have had to intervene and elections have had to be postponed or cancelled altogether.
