iROZHLAS | 'Trump's policies are bringing us closer together' European Union working on free trade deal with India

The European Union could strike one of the biggest trade deals in the world. At least that is what European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says about the free trade agreement with India, which after years of negotiations should be successfully concluded this year. Zuzana Krulichová, an analyst at the EUROPEUM Institute, commented on the agreement for iRozhlas.

Since Trump took office, the European Union has concluded a similar agreement with Mercosur (the South American Free Trade Association) and is now pushing for this deal. The European Community also wants India as a partner because it is a fast-growing economy that is on the rise, just as China once was.

The EU will not push India to change its mind, but will prioritise the economic security that the merger can bring. It is difficult to ask third countries to change their foreign policy significantly. It is clear from the countries in the region that they have different views. If the EU wants the deal, it will have to give in.
