Deník N | Analyst: Record EU Budget Is an Opportunity for Czechia — But Babiš Needs to Be More Active in Brussels Than Before
On Wednesday, the European Commission presented a draft of the new budget for the coming years. It is record-breaking in size and will also have to rely on new sources of funding. For Czechia, this represents a major opportunity, says Martin Vokálek, Executive Director of the EUROPEUM Institute. However, he points out that the Czech government will need to be more active in Brussels to actually secure access to these record EU funds.

Member states won’t come forward saying the proposal is great or that they like most of the budget with only minor objections — that would mean showing their cards and weakening their negotiating position. Instead, we’re seeing more maximalist stances.
A large part of the European Parliament argues that the budget should be increased even further. Ultimately, however, the negotiations will be about compromise. We're heading into a classic bargaining process, and in the end, no one will be 100% satisfied. Everyone will have to make concessions.
