Radio Prostor | Most households are against emission allowances, lacking information about the benefits

More than half of Czech households reject the introduction of emission allowances for transport and heating. This is likely due primarily to negative public debate, which lacks information about the potential benefits of the system, such as revenues for the state budget or protection for the most vulnerable households. Rebeka Hengalová, an analyst at the EUROPEUM Institute, commented on the situation for Radio Prostor.

In the survey, 60–70% of respondents are against these surcharges. We interpret this as meaning that communication about this system has so far been purely negative in the public sphere. The government is not emphasizing many of the positives, such as the revenues for the Czech Republic or the social protection and safety net plan for the most vulnerable households. The negative attitude is therefore based on fear, which is entirely justified, as most of the information relates to rising commodity prices. At the same time, this attitude is also based on a lack of information about the benefits the system could bring.
