The Czech parliamentary elections may be dominated by the movement of former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš. One of his main promises is to end the program that enabled Ukraine to obtain millions of artillery shells. The question remains whether he would actually push through this plan if he wins the election. Martin Vokálek, executive director and head of the Brussels office of the EUROPEUM Institute, commented for Forbes Ukraine.

Extreme parties, especially Stačilo, may seek overly radical measures, such as referendums on NATO and EU membership.

Babiš is a populist and pragmatist, but he is not suicidal.

By threatening EU or NATO membership, he would cross a red line and risk isolation and conflict with President Petr Pavel.

Babiš's populist style focuses on domestic policy—costly social programs, promises on energy prices, and reluctance to spend more at the EU level.

His premiership could weaken the Czech Republic's leading position in European politics and sanctions issues and drag it into disputes within NATO and the EU over contributions that he considers too expensive for the country. All this could complicate joint action by Western partners towards Ukraine.
