Gaining another prime minister is important for the Patriots at least in terms of communication, but it may also be politically advantageous. It gives them a level of political weight they would not otherwise have as an opposition group.
In recent months, the Patriots have been using individual ‘pragmatic’ votes to show that they are capable of having at least some impact in the European Parliament, while at the same time putting pressure on the unity of the majority coalition. Criticism has been coming especially from the left wing of the coalition, arguing that the EPP sometimes votes with the Patriots, which deepens tensions within the pro-European bloc.
Members of the European Parliament should not act merely as an extension of their national governments — they have their own mandate and faction priorities. Coordination with domestic politicians depends on the importance or subject of individual files, and above all on the model of cooperation and leadership established within each political party.
