Česká televize | Support from European countries for Ukraine

The President of the European Commission got into a dispute with the German Defense Minister Pistorius, who reproaches her that these sensitive and moreover theoretical plans cannot be discussed publicly. Is he right, or would Europe benefit more from an open debate? Answering is Viktor Daněk, Executive Deputy Director and Head of the Prague Office of the EUROPEUM Institute.

First of all, these are indeed theoretical plans, because the condition for any deployment of troops within a peace mission to Ukraine is a ceasefire, which does not exist and does not seem likely to happen in the foreseeable future. Of course, it does not benefit anything good when internal disputes become public. Here, however, I would support Ursula von der Leyen, because what Europe is quite earnestly trying to do is explain to the new American president Donald Trump why it is fundamentally in Europe's interest to be part of any negotiations regarding security arrangements in Europe.
