Český rozhlas Plus | The future of duty-free imports from Ukraine is uncertain. EU ministers meet in Brussels

Two years ago, the European Union temporarily lifted tariffs on Ukrainian agricultural imports to support a country under attack by Russia. However, the duty-free regime is due to expire in less than two weeks and its future is uncertain. Member States' agriculture ministers are discussing the matter today in Brussels.

It is by no means certain that tariffs will rise again - there will be tough negotiations and the result will probably be some kind of compromise. I hope that it will be a reasonable compromise, because it is in the interests of the European Union to help a country that is being attacked by an aggressor that is trying to disrupt the security order of Europe. I think that there is room for agreement, for example, on quotas, on the volume of Ukrainian exports that would be exempt from tariffs. This topic is attracting a lot of attention, especially in countries that are exposed disproportionately to Ukrainian exports, such as Poland. There, in particular, it is a highly political issue, because the group of voters for whom agriculture is key is very large.
