Český rozhlas | Slovakia stalls new EU sanctions, seeks exemption for Russian gas

The Slovak representative was instructed to request a postponement of the EU vote on sanctions against Russia. Viktor Daněk, Executive Deputy Director of the EUROPEUM Institute, commented on the situation for Czech Radio PLUS.

On the one hand, this is a legitimate request by a Member State, and it is not the first or the last time that a country has raised reservations about sanctions proposals against Russia if they affect its national interests. On the other hand, however, it is difficult to defend the fact that some Member States, including Slovakia, remain dependent on Russian gas imports. In such a situation, it is difficult to find wider support and, moreover, the Slovak position is not sustainable in the long term.
