Český rozhlas | The 18th package of EU sanctions against Russia is now a reality

Another one – the 18th package of EU sanctions against Russia is now a reality. After Slovakia withdrew its objections, the package was finally approved today in Brussels by the EU affairs ministers. The new sanctions mainly target the Russian banking and energy sectors. Viktor Daněk, Executive Deputy Director and Head of the Prague Office, commented on the matter for Czech Radio.

Slovakia finds itself in a very specific situation, along with Hungary. The vast majority of EU countries are no longer dependent on Russian natural gas. There is no ongoing debate suggesting that any other country is trying to reverse the trend seen in recent years. What Slovakia negotiated represents the bare minimum that Robert Fico needed in order to justify the compromise to his voters—after having sharply criticized the sanctions package.
