Český rozhlas | Viktor Daněk: Emission allowances are here to stay

Nearly two-thirds of Czech households are opposed to a fee on emitted emissions being reflected in the prices of petrol, diesel, coal, and natural gas. This is shown by sociological data gathered by the EUROPEUM Institute in cooperation with the STEM agency. The findings were commented on for Czech Radio by Viktor Daněk, Deputy Executive Director and Head of the Prague Office.
4. July 2025

Emission allowances have been in place in industrial sectors for 20 years, operating on the principle that the polluter pays, while those who invest in modernization are rewarded. Thanks to this system, Europe has already reduced its emissions by more than a third without hindering economic growth. The new ETS2 is expected to function similarly.

It’s difficult to estimate how much prices will rise. If the allowance price stays around the soft cap of 45 euros, the increase would amount to just a few Czech crowns per liter of gasoline.
