CNN Prima News | Commission passes no-confidence vote, but dependence on Social Democrats may grow

The European Commission, led by Ursula von der Leyen, has survived a vote of no-confidence triggered mainly by far-right MEPs over the Pfizer affair. Although the key majority in Parliament remains, the balance of power is changing and the Commission may be more dependent on the conditional support of left-wing factions in the future. Filip Křenek, an analyst at the EUROPEUM Institute, comments on the situation for CNN Prima News.

175 votes against is only partly surprising - it shows the consolidation of the conservative and eurosceptic part of the political spectrum. The 360 MEPs who voted for Ursula von der Leyen were decisive; compared to last year's vote to approve the Commission, this is not a significant shift. It will be interesting to see how support for the current Commission develops, as some of her proposals were previously supported by the right-wing faction, which this time expressed its lack of confidence in her. If the Eurosceptic voices have got anything right, it may be the Commission's leaning towards the Social Democrats, for example, who have made their loyalty conditional on concessions in return for a vote to remain.
