The European Union is facing a dual challenge. The European Parliament is discussing continued military aid to Ukraine, while also having to respond to potential trade restrictions from the United States. Both issues raise the question of Europe’s self-sufficiency and its ability to defend its own interests. Deputy Director of the EUROPEUM Institute, Viktor Daněk, commented on the situation for CNN Prima News.

The debate on military aid to Ukraine shows that, first and foremost, it is about investing in our own defence – in Europe's ability to defend itself. For years, we have relied on the American security umbrella, but it is becoming clear that in many ways we are not able to take care of ourselves without the support of the United States.
Europe has no choice but to respond to the threat of US tariffs – and it must respond firmly. If the Union imposes retaliatory measures, the consequences will affect both sides; Europeans and Americans alike will pay the price, and it is likely to fuel inflation. However, doing nothing would be an even worse alternative. The stability of European exports, the running of businesses and jobs are at stake. The question now remains, therefore, what form Europe will take in order to deter the United States from further increasing the pressure on its European partners.
