For the French, the conviction of far-right leader Marine Le Pen was surprising, and no one expected such severity. That’s how the verdict against the politician, who was a frontrunner in the next presidential election, was described to CNN Prima NEWS by former Czech ambassador to France, Petr Janyška. Together with Tereza Novotná, an analyst from the EUROPEUM think tank, they agreed that the French judiciary is not afraid of politicians at all. The case of Marine Le Pen has sparked strong reactions, precisely because at the moment she has the highest — and in her career also the greatest — chance of being elected in the 2027 presidential election.

She can therefore remain a member of parliament for now, but if early elections were to take place, she would not be able to return to the National Assembly.

In the event of Le Pen's failure at the court of appeal, the National Rally will indeed nominate Bardella as its candidate.
