U.S. President Donald Trump spoke by phone with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, thus breaking a nearly three-year-old diplomatic taboo. In his plan to end Russia's war in Ukraine, he called Moscow before Kyiv. How does Donald Trump envision the art of the deal? Viktor Daněk, Deputy Director of the EUROPEUM Institute, commented for Český rozhlas.

The EU rightly and decisively put its foot down immediately, stating that negotiations could not take place solely between the United States and Russia. Excluding Ukraine, the directly affected party, would have been nothing short of a second Munich Agreement. Likewise, Europe, as the main actor supporting Ukraine, must have its place at the table. What needed to happen did happen – JD Vance backed down and promised a seat at the negotiating table for EU representatives, which is undoubtedly a positive development for the Czech Republic as well.
