How long will the new US-EU tariff agreement last? Viktor Daněk, Deputy Executive Director of the EUROPEUM Institute for European Policy, commented on its possible duration and impact for Czech Radio Plus.

A significant number of European exporters refused to risk a further escalation of the trade war and preferred, through the governments in the member countries, at least temporary predictability of the trading environment. Incidentally, the US negotiations with Japan also ended at the same level of tariff surcharge.
The terms of the US-European agreement suggest that the real aim of the European side was not to set up a new long-term reciprocal trade regime, but only to provide temporary stability over the Atlantic, to protect at least some key sectors and to outlast the Trump presidency - with the hope that he would later be replaced in the White House by a more liberal successor.
