ČT24 | Trump's tariffs have frozen negotiations. The EU is now hesitant about what his real goal is

While the United States and the European Union seemed close to a trade deal, US President Donald Trump suddenly announced 30% tariffs on European goods. The decision comes as negotiations are almost at an end, with European diplomats speculating whether this is a definitive break-up or a pressure tactic by Washington. Viktor Daněk, deputy director of the EUROPEUM Institute, comments on the situation for ČT24.

There could be two explanations for this: either Donald Trump does not want to make a deal and is thus fulfilling the intention that people from his entourage have repeatedly talked about - that is, that he wants to set such unfavourable trade conditions to force companies from all over the world to move production to the US. Or, on the contrary, he wants to make a deal and it is just his negotiating style. When he has a deal within his grasp, he uses pressure to get the other side to make last-minute concessions and get more favourable terms from a position of strength. No one can see inside Donald Trump's head, but I think that the European Commission's approach so far has been very artificial. And I think the deal is still real.
