Europe’s push to increase defense spending is understandable. However, it must not come at the expense of investments in social cohesion or efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change. If living conditions for Europeans deteriorate, the drive for self-sufficiency and defense readiness could be swept away by a wave of far-right governments serving the interests of Russia and a Trump-led United States.
