Econews | Brussels May Reject the Acceleration Zones
In the coming months, the European Commission will assess whether the Czech Republic has properly defined and proposed the acceleration zones. However, the first case from the Olomouc region already shows that the zones are more likely to restrict wind power projects than to facilitate them. Filip Křenek, an Associate Research Fellow at the EUROPEUM Institute, provided commentary for Ekonews.

Neither the European Commission nor the Czech Republic has any interest in escalating the situation regarding the acceleration zones to the point of halting payments from the National Recovery Plan. That is the last resort, which the Commission will not want to use without good reason. If the Commission has reservations, it can communicate them to the Czech side. On the other hand, the Commission is looking at the actual impacts—not just whether the acceleration zones will be created “on paper,” but whether, as defined, they can fulfill their stated purpose.
