The Czech Republic keeps making the same mistake over and over again. We only start paying attention to key EU legislation once it's finalized and there's no choice left but to comply. The expansion of the emission trading system to transport and heating, known as ETS 2, is the latest proof. Czech politicians had plenty of opportunities to act in time. They didn’t take them.
For two decades, emission allowances have been a cornerstone of the EU’s market-based climate policy and millions of Czech households are already paying for them through their energy bills. Expecting EU countries to abandon this system without a viable alternative is nothing short of an illusion.
