Právo | Viktor Daněk: Nobody Hears Draghi's Alarm

It was supposed to shake the European complacency about its own economic performance and initiate radical change. The subject is the report by Mario Draghi, former president of the European Central Bank, which was published exactly one year ago. The report was commented on by Viktor Daněk, Executive Deputy Director and head of the Prague office of the EUROPEUM Institute.

The several-hundred-page document had essentially one key message: the aging population will have such a dramatic impact on the economy in the coming decades that Europe can no longer afford to fall behind in its competitiveness; otherwise, it faces the agony of prolonged economic stagnation. Draghi also provided a concrete recipe for how to overcome this. The European Commission adopted it as its own.

Therefore, the head of the EU executive, Ursula von der Leyen, convened experts from across Europe in Brussels this week to assess the progress made over the past year. In her speech, she was full of optimism. Improvements are indeed being made, for example in simplifying regulations, but the actual list of successes still falls far short of the picture she tried to portray to those present.
