RTVS | EU decision-making process on retaliatory tarriffs

Tensions in trade relations between the European Union and the United States are once again on the rise. In connection with the threat of new U.S. tariffs and the European Commission’s response, the situation was commented on for RTVS by Viktor Daněk, Deputy Director of the Institute for European Policy EUROPEUM.
9. April 2025

In my view, the Commission’s response is proportionate. It may hurt Trump, but it’s not as strong a move as his initial strike. The EU is still keeping the door open for negotiating a favorable trade deal, including potential tariff reductions.

Trump typically ignores expert advice, so further retaliatory measures can’t be ruled out. The impact of the trade war is already visible in the U.S. stock market – while economies may adapt over time, the transition period will be painful.

The EU still retains a key strategic option – targeting U.S. services, where the U.S. runs a surplus with the EU.
