RTVS: European Parliament: Russia is a state sponsor of terrorism

Following the Russian attacks on civilians in Ukraine, the European Parliament has designated Russia a state sponsor of terrorism. What does this declaration mean in practice and what does it mean for member states? Our Executive Director Martin Vokálek commented on this matter for Slovak RTVS.
24. November 2022

"This is a strong political message from the European Parliament, a gesture that symbolises support for Ukraine. Further decision-making processes will depend on individual member states, which are the drivers of EU foreign policy as a whole. They may, for example, further restrict diplomatic relations with Russia, or they may, for example, continue to strongly advocate concrete steps against Russia, or, on the contrary, strong steps in support of Ukraine."

He adds that "the European Parliament is now also discussing the possibility of using the proceeds of seized Russian assets for the reconstruction of Ukraine. As for the next package of sanctions, that is a matter for the individual states and it is important that they come together and take action together."
