Seznam zprávy | They push for leaving the EU, but on the painful consequences, both Stačilo! and SPD remain silent

No euro, no EU. Ahead of the elections, populist rhetoric calling for an end to European integration is gaining strength. But anti-EU politicians from Stačilo! and SPD remain silent on how “painful” a breakup with Brussels would be – and what scenario would await the Czech Republic. Martin Vokálek, Executive Director of the EUROPEUM Institute, commented on the issue for Seznam Zprávy.

I have never heard from these parties any rational alternative for what the Czech Republic should look like outside the EU, nor any analysis of the possible consequences of leaving – unlike the existing and credible analyses of the impacts of our EU membership, which are, on the whole, positive.

Leaving the EU would weaken our security, economy, and international standing, and would strongly affect all citizens, especially socially vulnerable groups and regions.

Businesses would face rising costs, a drop in foreign investment, and a decline in competitiveness, leading to large-scale layoffs. Some major corporations would likely decide to scale down their activities and production in the Czech Republic, further weakening our economy.

The Czech Republic has long been a net beneficiary of EU funds. By leaving, we would lose access to these funds and would have to replace their role from our own resources – meaning higher taxes or drastic cuts.
