Ursula von der Leyen maintains a strong position in her second term as head of the European Commission. A politician shaped by political crises and known for her emphasis on executive decision-making, she continues to dominate on key defence issues. Although the newly created position of Defence Commissioner has quickly lost its importance, von der Leyen herself continues to set the direction - for example with her plan to mobilise hundreds of billions of euros to support European defence and Ukraine. Viktor Daněk, deputy director of the EUROPEUM Institute, commented for Seznam Zprávy.

She is certainly concentrating more power in her hands than in his first term. She has been very creative in dividing up the portfolios for the individual Commissioners, because there are various overlaps, which opens up room for disputes. And who has the last word in the event of disputes? It is, of course, the President of the Commission. If someone pulls the longer end of the rope, someone else pulls the shorter end. I would not say that she is trying to undermine the Commissioner, but it is rather the experience of the last term, when she saw that disputes in the Commission had to be resolved by the President.
