STVR | Freeing up the EU budget for Ukraine's defence and arms investments

It is mainly about supporting industry in Europe. It is about awakening some capital, enabling companies to invest in defence in the long term and to create some new capacities, which are missing at the moment. Zuzana Krulichová, analyst at EUROPEUM Institute, commented for STVR.

The meeting in Washington accelerated discussions on how the European Union, and Europe as a whole, must become more involved in supporting Ukraine and investing in its own defence.

It is not yet clear how the funding will be provided or in which other budget chapters the funding will be found. It will be up to the Member States to implement it, and it is possible that some other portfolios will be neglected at the expense of funds invested in defence.
