Relations between Brussels and Beijing have often changed dramatically over the years — at times marked by cooperation, at other times by tension, and frequently by concerns over imbalance. Why are relations with China strategically important for Brussels? The situation was commented on by EUROPEUM Institute analyst Zuzana Krulichová.

China is the European Union’s third-largest trading partner, and the EU depends on Chinese supplies in various sectors — hence the strategic importance of this relationship. EU officials also recognize the risks associated with this dependency.
The main issue is the balance in trade and trade relations. The European Union imports more goods from China than it exports to China. This results in a trade deficit and deepens the EU’s dependency on China. That is why the EU is emphasizing the need for balanced trade relations at the summit. It is an urgent issue, but also a long-standing one that has been under discussion for quite some time.
