Svet :24 | Ursula von der Leyen remains at the head of the European Commission

The European Commission, led by Ursula von der Leyen, survived a motion of censure in the European Parliament. The initiatives of the Patriots for Europe and Left groups ultimately failed to secure the necessary number of votes. To dismiss the Commission, two-thirds of those present and a majority of all MEPs would have had to support the motion. Martin Vokálek, Executive Director and Head of the Brussels Office of the EUROPEUM Institute, commented for Svet :24.

Within the European Parliament, this certainly shows that Ursula von der Leyen still has the support of a large number of MEPs, but at the same time, it is a kind of increased prestige for her in the sense that this support is no longer as solid as it once was. In addition to the protest parties, there are also those in Parliament who normally support Ursula but are now perhaps a little more skeptical about her actions or how she is dealing with various crises.

The current European Commission must be truly prepared for the possibility that these votes may be repeated and that there will be forces seeking to undermine its position. At the same time, it must also be prepared for the fact that the European Parliament must continue to be taken into account and that it must be involved in the entire political decision-making process at the European Union level. The main risk, therefore, is that Ursula von der Leyen could begin to lose the support of her center-right majority in the European Parliament.
