Teraz.sk | Court verdict against the Commission: transparency must apply even in crises

Wednesday's verdict of the Court of Justice of the European Union, which upheld the European Commission's misconduct in refusing to publish text messages between Ursula von der Leyen and the Pfizer chief, sets an important precedent for the entire EU, according to Martin Vokálek, executive director of the EUROPEUM Institute for European Policy.

The pandemic crisis required swift and coordinated decisions at EU level. At that time, Member States did not have the capacity or the tools to act independently and effectively. At the same time, it was the Member States that did not give the EC much power in the health field, while during the global health crisis they demanded a rapid and coordinated EU response and solution at European level. Moreover, the non-publication of all communications is contrary to the principles of transparency and accountability in the case of such a large public procurement. The rules of democratic accountability must also apply in crisis management.
