Visegrad Insight: Slovenia’s New Government Rejects ‘Orbán’s Visegrad’

The head of our Brussels office, Žiga Faktor, commented for Visegrad Insight. Žiga Faktor points out that the centre-left opposition parties united in an informal coalition known as the "Constitutional Arch Coalition" have not coordinated as closely as the opposition parties in the Czech Republic, which have formed two coalition blocs, the centre-right SPOLU and the centrist PirStan.

Faktor sees a challenge in consolidating Gibanje Svoboda into an established political party, so it does not turn into another ‘four-year project’ referring to GS’ centrist predecessors’ short lifespans in power. ‘A good strategic move by Golob is that Marjan Šarec and Alenka Bratušek were asked to take part in the cabinet,’ adds Faktor. 

Faktor also points out that at times it is difficult to read Petr Fiala’s relationship with his Polish counterparts. For example when Fiala refered to his recent meeting with Morawiecki as that of ‘value-based policy yielding concrete results,’ further adding to the problematic perception of the Visegrad group and its relations to Brussels.
