WHAT news | Urban Heat Adaptation Should Be a Public Interest. Which European Cities Are Getting It Right?

According to the European Copernicus service, July in Europe is once again expected to be warmer than average. So far, this year continues the trend of record-breaking global temperatures set in 2023 and 2024. Climate scientists have long known that European cities are warming significantly — but in recent years, the extreme heat has also become a concern for the public and, as a result, for politicians, including those at the local level. So how can we best survive the summer in the city — and what actions can cities take now? Prague and most regional capitals in Czechia are already implementing their urban climate adaptation strategies. In addition, the capital city has adopted a strategic Climate Plan aiming to reduce carbon emissions by 45% by 2030, as well as a Sustainable Mobility Plan and a Circular Economy Strategy. Adaptation — measures designed to help cities adjust to climate change, warming, and extreme weather — is a key component of all these strategies.
