Česká televize | Why Europeans are turning their attention to the right

Europe is experiencing a significant shift to the right. In Germany, the result of the far-right AfD party, which came second with 20.8%, attracted a lot of attention, consolidating its position especially in the eastern part of the country. In Romania, the Eurosceptic nationalist George Simion dominated the first round of the presidential elections, winning over 40% of the vote and advancing to the run-off. These results confirm the growing support for the far right across Europe, which poses a challenge to the traditional political parties and to European integration as a whole. Viktor Daněk, deputy director of EUROPEUM Institute, comments for Czech Television.

The rise of the far right represents a long-term and not very surprising trend. Traditional centre parties have been facing a crisis of confidence for some time, while parties like the AfD are gaining mass support, especially in the context of the migration crisis and security issues. Political analysts describe this development as a Europe-wide phenomenon to which established parties must respond. There are different strategies - some are rhetorically moving closer to the far right, while others are trying to ostracise these new actors and push them out of the political spectrum. But such an approach carries a risk: if the scales are tipped, a party like the AfD could dominate Germany in the future.
