České Noviny | Analysts: ANO's victory is not good news for Brussels, but Babiš is not Orbán

According to Brussels analysts, Andrej Babiš's victory would not be a positive sign for the EU, but the nature of his cabinet will be decisive. Although he is compared to Viktor Orbán, experts describe him as a pragmatist rather than a radical Eurosceptic, which suggests that Czech foreign policy may not undergo a fundamental change. Martin Vokálek, executive director and head of the Brussels office of the EUROPEUM Institute, commented on this for České Noviny.

The victory of the ANO movement is not surprising in itself, but rather confirms a long-term trend. Babiš has very effectively managed to capitalize on the dissatisfaction of a large part of Czech society with the current government, which was perceived by many as detached from the problems of ordinary people and overly technocratic.

Czech society has made it clear that it wants change and different leadership, but at the same time it still does not want a complete departure from the democratic framework and European orientation of the country.

In foreign policy, under the leadership of the likely future Prime Minister Babiš, I do not expect a fundamental or radical shift, although here too it will depend to some extent on the final form of his government. In any case, there will be a change in tone, style, and priorities.
