Seznam Zprávy | “A Pyrrhic victory” — this is the reaction to the postponement of emission allowances.
EU environment ministers agreed to postpone the introduction of the ETS2 emissions trading system to 2028. While some states frame this as a victory, experts warn the delay will cause confusion and slow down essential green-transition investments. The Czech Republic also risks EU penalties or losing access to the Social Climate Fund if it refuses to implement ETS2 fully. Commented by Rebeka Hengalová, Research Fellow at the EUROPEUM Institute.

“Delaying the launch of the emissions trading system would mean that companies selling fuel, coal or gas wouldn’t need to buy allowances until 2028. As a result, higher prices for these commodities would reach households later. However, this postponement would also push back the start of the Social Climate Fund, which is intended to help vulnerable households cope with these costs. Member states have been preparing their plans for the fund for over a year and a half, so any delay would slow investments designed to soften the impact of the green transition.”
