ČRo | Climate Target by 2040

We have committed ourselves to carbon neutrality in 2050, which is why we need to set milestones so that we work towards carbon neutrality incrementally, so that our efforts are not pushed back five to 12 years in 2048. Milestones are also important for predictability, not only for politicians but also for businesses and households. Rebeka Hengalová, researcher at EUROPEUM Institute, commented for Czech Radio.
2. July 2025

A 90% reduction in emissions compared to 1990 is realistic; the European Union has currently reduced its emissions by 36%. In the Czech Republic, the reduction is even 46%. According to projections, which take into account current decarbonisation efforts in all sectors, we should reach EU-level neutrality in 2050. In the Czech Republic, according to the research institute Sépia, we should reach a reduction of 82% in 2040. On a national scale, this depends on, for example, the commitments we should define in our climate protection policy, national energy and climate plan and similar documents.

The specific steps of the proposal are still under debate. For now, it is clear that some sectors will be able to help themselves, there will be so-called flexibility, and they will be able to use credits from third countries, but the specific steps depend on the negotiations that will now begin.
