ČRo Plus | Coalition of the Willing Summit: first a fair ceasefire, then peacekeepers

France and the UK will send a team of experts to Ukraine to assess the needs of the military there. The announcement was made at a summit of the coalition of the willing in Paris, where representatives of thirty countries, including the Czech delegation led by Prime Minister Petr Fiala, met. What else did the summit bring? And what direction can the peace talks take in the coming weeks? Martin Vokálek, Director General of the EUROPEUM Institute, commented on the situation for Czech Radio Plus.
27. March 2025

The summits we have seen in recent weeks are very important - they allow countries to agree on key challenges, such as the war in Ukraine at the moment. However, they are not as binding as European Council summits. One of the topics of the summit was raising the issue of sending peacekeepers to Ukraine. However, this is still somewhat premature - a fair and lasting ceasefire must first be achieved.

It is important to remember that the European troops sent to Ukraine will not confront the Russian troops directly, but will be tasked with monitoring compliance with the peace. I believe that it is not appropriate for these troops to come from states that border the Russian Federation on its eastern flank - be it Poland, Slovakia or Hungary.
