ČRo Plus | The European Union is looking for a common way to respond to US tariffs

The European Union is showing its willingness to negotiate with the United States on the issue of tariffs, but at the same time it is preparing its own defence scenarios. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU plans to strengthen the single market in response to possible US tariffs. Ministers of the member states meet in Luxembourg. Filip Křenek, analyst at EUROPEUM Institute, commented for Czech Radio Plus.

If Member States are able to agree on a common approach, that would be ideal. A number of ministers who met in Luxembourg today mentioned this, but every one of them said that the solution should be slightly different. Although the EU is trying to act in a united way, it is very likely that there was a range of possible retaliatory measures in the Chamber as to how the EU might respond. Trade policy is an EU competence, so a qualified majority is all that is needed to agree on a course of action. So not all states may be happy with the outcome.
