Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung | How much Orbán is in Fico?

Robert Fico has been Slovakia's Prime Minister again for a little over a year. As premier, he pursues autocratic ambitions and maintains close contacts with Russia. Is the country on the same path as Hungary? Project manager Kristína Chlebáková from the EUROPEUM Institute commented for the Hannoversche Allgemeine.

The European Commission is closely monitoring developments in Slovakia. It wants to prevent a "Hungarian scenario." Some funds have already been temporarily frozen by Brussels, affecting the post-Covid recovery plan NextGenerationEU. Fico is now preparing Slovaks for further possible cuts in EU funds. Like Orbán, he uses a narrative critical of Brussels, claiming that individual countries are punished for independent thinking and action. However, Brussels will not take drastic measures against Slovakia as long as Fico supports the EU line, especially regarding neighboring Ukraine. This is a game that Fico, as an experienced and cunning politician, knows how to play very well.
