The European Commission has asked the Czech Republic to postpone the signing of the contract for the construction of the Dukovany nuclear power plant. It is investigating whether the Korean company KHNP has obtained advantages in the tender that could distort the EU's internal market. Filip Křenek, an analyst at the EUROPEUM Institute, commented for TV Nova.

Currently, the energy mix in the Czech Republic consists mainly of nuclear and coal power, with some secondary input from renewable sources. Coal-fired power plants are to be phased out by 2033 as part of the country's climate mitigation efforts, so the country will be dependent on nuclear and renewables to meet future electricity demand, which is likely to grow due to the shift to electromobility. US company Westinghouse and France's EDF have filed a complaint with the Czech Office for the Protection of Competition over the selection of South Korea's KHNP in the country’s 16bn euro tender to build two new reactors at the Dukovany nuclear power plant. Rebeka Hengalová, an analyst at EUROPEUM Institute, commented for bne IntelliNews.
