ČRo Plus | Could the European Union pass a complete ban on Russian gas supplies, including LNG?

As part of the EU's broader strategy to reduce energy dependence on Russia and strengthen energy security, a proposal has been put forward to ban Russian gas imports to all 27 EU Member States, including the Czech Republic and Poland. The move is part of a response to geopolitical tensions and Russia's aggression against Ukraine, which has exposed the vulnerability of the European energy sector. How do the ten countries, including Poland and the Czech Republic, justify this proposal? Viktor Daněk, deputy director of EUROPEUM Institute, commented for Czech Radio Plus.

We, in cooperation with our foreign colleagues, calculated the ratio between all the Western aid delivered to Ukraine and the amount of fossil fuels purchased from Russia on the second anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the amount of funds de facto sent to Moscow is higher. The question arises as to who we are supporting, Ukraine or Russia. I hope that now, with the third anniversary coming up, the ratio will look different, but it is still a serious problem if Western countries are supporting Ukraine on the one hand, but at the same time, on the other hand, de facto financing the war indirectly through fossil fuel purchases from Russia.
