REPORT: Public debate | Green and Digital — Did We Miss Social?

On 2 June, a debate on the future of green and digital Europe was held at the University of Economics in Prague. The guest speaker was Katarina Ivanković-Knežević, Director for Social Rights and Inclusion at the European Commission's Directorate-General for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion. The debate was moderated by Jarolím Antal, Director of the Centre for European Studies at the Faculty of International Relations.

While one candidate promises close cooperation with the US and support for Ukraine, the other advocates greater European integration and openly criticises the current direction. iRozhlas | Síkela has a strong team and an active agenda. But there is a lack of contact with Czech citizens

Jozef Síkela (STAN) has completed his first six months as EU Commissioner for International Partnerships. He has visited 17 countries on three continents on topics ranging from lithium mining in Chile to transport in Central Asia to education in Africa. His appointment has been hailed as a success by the government, particularly due to his “strong economic portfolio”. However, experts point out that it is too early to really assess his work - there are repeated criticisms of poor communication. Martin Vokálek, executive director of the EUROPEUM Institute, and analyst Zuzana Krulichová commented for iRozhlas.

RTVS | Britain is considering a return to Erasmus+

The European Union and the United Kingdom are signalling a willingness to renew and strengthen their relationship, which has noticeably cooled after Brexit. In addition to the new defence agreement, both sides are preparing a return to an area that used to be a symbol of European cooperation: student exchanges. The UK could rejoin the Erasmus+ programme after years, which would mark a major reversal of London's previous approach and an important step towards rebuilding trust, especially among the younger generation. Low-emission materials for the Czech automotive industry

The Low Emission Materials for the Czech Automotive Industry project is the fifth EUROPEUM project aimed at decarbonising the Czech automotive industry. Our latest policy brief is aimed at policy makers, government representatives and experts who influence the development of climate policy in the Czech Republic. The text, written by Rebeka Hengalová, Research Fellow, and Jana Abíková, Head of the Green Europe Programme, maps the transport needs of the most vulnerable groups in the Czech Republic and provides arguments for the timely and full adoption of ETS2 and the appropriate allocation of the SCF to minimise transport poverty. The brief assesses possible solutions and discussed measures that could be funded by the national Social Climate Plan to reduce the impact of ETS2 on low-income households.

Policy paper | Tackling Transport Poverty in the Czech Republic

While transport poverty does not affect the majority of the population, available data shows that it impacts a significant and growing portion of Czech society, making it a serious issue that cannot be overlooked or expected to resolve itself over time. This policy paper by research fellow Rebeka Hengalová and head of Green Europe programme Jana Abíková details the experiences of transport-poor citizens, outlines good practice of measures from abroad and explains the potential utilisation of the Social Climate Fund in alleviating transport poverty.
