iDNES.cz | Emission allowances will accentuate transport poverty, the Social Climate Fund to be the cure

The introduction of the new EU Emissions Trading System could significantly increase transport costs, which would affect low-income households the most. However, transport poverty is not just a question of spendings, but also of accessibility and quality of transport. Rebeka Hengalová, a researcher at the EUROPEUM Institute, commented for iDnes.cz.

Emissions trading is now mandatory for suppliers of fuel, coal and natural gas. They are expected to make their products more expensive so that the new price reflects the need to buy allowances. Low-income households have in many cases already reduced their consumption to a minimum, especially during the energy crisis. It can be assumed that they cannot finance the replacement of products that would reduce their consumption in the long term. This is not only transport, but also housing. It can be said that low-income and vulnerable households are already in a disadvantaged position, they do not have the means to change their fossil fuel consumption, hence to eliminate a problem and behaviour that is becoming increasingly expensive.
