Seznam Zprávy | Government and opposition fight permits, despite economic realities

The government wants to protect consumers from rising fossil fuel prices, but at the same time refuses to be part of the European ETS 2 emissions trading scheme, the proceeds of which are supposed to help households with the costs. Rebeka Hengalová, an analyst at the Europeum Institute, commented on the situation for Seznam Zprávy.

Czechs love subsidies and, as the latest EUROPEUM data shows, this is also true of support for investments in greener heating and transport. Thanks to heating upgrades, many households have already reduced their energy bills during the energy crisis, as such renovations are often unaffordable without subsidies. The Czech Republic is opening up a way for the European Union to help it make just such investments, but it will not be possible without an unpopular extension of emission allowances.
