TN.cz | EU wants a free trade agreement with India

The European Union could strike one of the biggest trade deals in the world - with India. Indeed, because of a potential trade war and deteriorating relations with the United States, the EU is looking to expand its reach into other global markets. This agreement was first mentioned in 2008. Martin Vokálek, Executive Director of EUROPEUM Institute, discussed the topic.

These trade agreements take a long time to conclude; the EU-India FTA is a free trade agreement that regulates trade between the two countries. The benefits of the agreement should accrue to both sides. The deal is comprehensive. It should remove tariff and non-tariff barriers that prevent companies from trading goods and services.

There are several obstacles to concluding an agreement. There are regulatory differences, some sensitive sectors and, last but not least, geopolitical factors such as India's relationship with Russia.
