However, this is an encouraging sign, because until now we have not known what the ultimate goal of the Trump administration and its aggressive trade policy actually is. Whether the aim is to bring industry back to the US and keep trade barriers high enough to encourage industry to return - although it is questionable whether such a thing is technically possible - or whether it is an attempt to negotiate favourable trade agreements from a position of strength and pressure. Trump himself seems not to have been entirely clear on this. If he is now leaning towards the more positive option, that is only good, but I remain very sceptical. After all, a similar 'mini-deal' between the EU and the US was attempted during his first term as President, and then it failed due to the disinterest of the US side.
